ESI Contribution Calculator
Enter ESI wage components accurately
The calculator applies the stated contribution rates to the full monthly ESI wages. The wage ceiling is an eligibility test; it is not a cap on the wage amount used for contributions when coverage applies.

How this ESI contribution calculator works
| Item | Formula | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Contributory ESI wages | Fixed ESI wages + included allowance / wage component | — |
| Employee contribution | Contributory ESI wages × 0.0075 | 0.75% |
| Employer contribution | Contributory ESI wages × 0.0325 | 3.25% |
| Total monthly contribution | Employee + employer contribution | 4.00% |
For a person ordinarily assessed at the ceiling, coverage is indicated when monthly ESI wages are at or below ₹21,000 (₹25,000 for a qualifying person with disability). If an employee is already covered and earnings cross the ceiling during a contribution period, ESI contributions generally continue through the end of that period; select the continuation control only for that situation.
Eligibility versus contribution calculation
Eligibility: the selected ₹21,000 or ₹25,000 ceiling helps assess whether an employee falls within ESI coverage on wages. Calculation: once coverage applies, the current rates are calculated on the actual contributory ESI wages entered here, not merely on the ceiling amount. This page therefore shows ₹0 when wages are above the applicable ceiling and no continuation is selected; it does not treat that as a wage cap.
Contribution periods are generally 1 April–30 September and 1 October–31 March. Whether a particular salary change, joining date, wage component, exemption, or establishment is covered should be verified with ESIC or the employer’s payroll team.
ESIC contribution, in plain terms
Worked example: ESI on an ₹18,000 salary
For a gross wage of ₹18,000/month (below the ₹21,000 coverage threshold): employee share = 18,000 × 0.75% = ₹135, and employer share = 18,000 × 3.25% = ₹585 — total ₹720/month, or ₹4,320 across the six-month contribution period. The employee's net deduction shows on the payslip as "ESI ₹135". Wages above ₹21,000/month (₹25,000 for persons with disability) are outside mandatory coverage — see the eligibility section above.
How this calculator works: it applies the statutory 0.75% + 3.25% rates to your contributory wages with the wage-ceiling and mid-period continuation rules built in. Frequently asked questions
What are the current ESI contribution rates?
The employee contribution is 0.75% of contributory wages and the employer contribution is 3.25%, making 4.00% in total. Confirm current rates with ESIC or your payroll team before relying on an estimate, as statutory rules can change.
How do I calculate ESI deduction on salary?
Multiply gross contributory wages by 0.75% for the employee share and 3.25% for the employer share. On ₹18,000/month: ₹135 employee + ₹585 employer = ₹720 total. The calculator above handles ceilings and continuation rules.
Is the ₹21,000 ceiling a cap on contributions?
No. It is primarily a coverage threshold. When ESI coverage applies, the contribution is calculated on the actual contributory wages, not capped at ₹21,000. The higher ₹25,000 threshold is for the applicable person-with-disability provision.
What happens if salary crosses the wage ceiling mid-period?
If the person was already covered at the beginning of a contribution period and wages cross the ceiling during that period, contributions generally continue until its end. This calculator has a specific continuation control for that case; it is not an eligibility override for a newly joining or otherwise uncovered employee.
Which allowances should be entered as ESI wages?
That depends on the statutory definition of wages, the employment terms, and applicable ESIC guidance or decisions. Use your employer’s payroll classification or seek professional advice. This calculator lets you add an included component but cannot determine whether an allowance is legally includible.
