Worked example: Delhi to Jaipur road trip

Delhi to Jaipur is roughly 280 km one way. In a petrol car averaging 16 km/L at Delhi's ₹94.72/L: fuel needed = 280 ÷ 16 = 17.5 L, cost = 17.5 × 94.72 ≈ ₹1,658 one way (₹3,316 return). A diesel SUV at 14 km/L and ₹87.62/L costs about ₹1,752 one way — but carries more people and luggage. For a 900 km diesel run (a common Delhi–Udaipur trip): 900 ÷ 14 = 64.3 L × ₹87.62 ≈ ₹5,633.

Use the cost-per-km column to sanity-check any trip: monthly 1,000 km on a compact hatch ≈ ₹5,600–6,300 in fuel alone. The calculator above turns your exact distance, mileage and today's pump price into precise numbers.

How this calculator works

Fuel needed = distance ÷ mileage; cost = fuel × price per litre/kg. City prices in the table are indicative for 2026 — pump rates revise daily with crude and taxes, so verify on your fuel company's app before a long trip. All maths runs in your browser. Content reviewed and updated for 2026.

Tip: prices change daily with global crude + central/state taxes. Verify on the IOCL/HPCL/BPCL app for the latest before a long trip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Fuel needed = distance ÷ mileage, then multiply by pump price. Example: 350 km at 16 km/L and ₹105/L = 21.9 L × ₹105 = ₹2,296. Enter your distance, mileage and price above for an instant answer.

How much does fuel cost per km in India?

At ₹95/L petrol: a small hatchback at 18–20 km/L costs ₹4.75–5.30/km, a mid-size SUV at 12–14 km/L costs ₹6.80–7.90/km, and a bike at 40–50 km/L costs under ₹2.50/km. CNG works out to roughly ₹2.50–3.00/km.

How much petrol do I need for 700 km?

Divide distance by your car's mileage: at 16 km/L you need 43.75 L (≈ ₹4,140 at ₹94.72/L); at 20 km/L, 35 L (≈ ₹3,315). A 1400 km trip at 14 km/L needs 100 L — about ₹9,000 at typical petrol prices.

Why is my real-world mileage lower than ARAI?

ARAI figures are lab-tested under ideal conditions. City traffic, AC, under-inflated tyres, and roof carriers cut real mileage by 15-30%. Track tankful-to-tankful for an accurate running number.

Is CNG cheaper than petrol for my daily commute?

Usually yes — CNG costs ~₹76/kg vs petrol ₹102/L, and CNG cars deliver ~25 km/kg. Net cost/km is roughly half. But a CNG kit costs ₹30-50k upfront and may reduce boot space; recover in ~6-9 months for 50 km/day drivers.

How are fuel prices set in India?

Crude cost + refinery margin + central excise + state VAT + dealer commission, revised daily since 2017. City differences reflect state taxes and transport costs.
