What makes a slug SEO-friendly
- Hyphens, not underscores — Google treats hyphen as a word separator, underscore as a joiner.
- Lowercase everything — some servers are case-sensitive; /Guide ≠ /guide (duplicate content risk).
- Strip stop words — "a", "the", "to" add length without value. Keep numbers — "2026-guide" is searchable.
- Stay under 60 chars — longer slugs get truncated in search results.
Indian twist: rupee ₹, ®, ™ — non-Latin chars get stripped. "₹10 Lakh in 5 Years" becomes
10-lakh-in-5-years.Frequently asked questions
Should I include a date (2026) in the slug?
If the content is time-sensitive (news, deals, tax years, deadlines) then yes — it signals freshness to both readers and Google. Evergreen how-to guides rank better without years.
Is HTTPS wherever the slug matters?
Slugs are just path segments — they work in WordPress, Ghost, Webflow, Shopify, custom backends anywhere. Case may matter on Linux/Nginx servers, so keep everything lowercase.
Can I use a slug with override uppercase?
Technically yes, but avoid it. Search engines may see /Blog-Post and /blog-post as two different pages, splitting rank.
Why no underscores?
Google's own Matt Cutts confirmed hyphens are word separators, underscores aren't. "best_cms" reads as one word to the crawler.
