How net pay is estimated
- Gross vs net: gross is your salary before taxes; net is what hits your bank account.
- Effective tax: most middle-income US workers see 17–30% deducted in total — use 25% as a reasonable default.
- This tool is simplified: real paychecks depend on filing status, state, pre-tax 401(k) contributions and more.
From gross pay to net take-home pay
What is net take-home pay? It is your gross salary minus every mandatory deduction — income tax, social security contributions and any forced payroll deductions. What is left is the number that actually lands in your bank account, and the only number worth budgeting from.
How to calculate net pay from gross pay (worked example): on a $75,000 US salary, subtract federal income tax (~$8,200), FICA at 7.65% (~$5,738) and state tax where applicable — netting roughly $58,000–60,000, or about $4,850/month. A quick planning shortcut: middle-income earners typically keep 72–80% of gross.
Calculating in-hand salary in India (CTC → net): Indian CTC includes employer PF and gratuity that never reach your account. For an India-specific computation with old vs new tax regime, EPF, professional tax and standard deduction, use the Income Tax Calculator (India) — it computes your in-hand salary side by side for both regimes. How this calculator works: enter gross pay and a deduction percentage (or use the presets); the tool computes net pay across pay frequencies instantly in your browser — nothing is stored. Content reviewed and updated for 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What is net take-home pay?
Net take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax, social-security contributions and mandatory payroll deductions — the amount that actually reaches your bank account each pay cycle.
How do I calculate my paycheck from my salary?
Start from gross pay, subtract income tax, FICA/social security (7.65% in the US) and state taxes plus any pre-tax deductions like 401(k) or health premiums. The result is your net paycheck — see the worked $75,000 example above.
How much of my gross salary will I take home?
Most middle-income US workers keep 72–80% of gross after all deductions. In India, in-hand salary from CTC is typically 70–75% after PF, gratuity provisioning, professional tax and TDS — model it exactly with the Income Tax Calculator linked above.
Is this calculator result exact?
It is a close planning estimate. Real paychecks depend on filing status, state, pre-tax elections and benefit choices. Confirm final figures with your payroll team.
Can I use this tool for any currency?
Yes. Use the currency selector — INR, USD, EUR, GBP, AED, CAD, AUD, SGD, JPY, CNY, CHF, NZD, ZAR or SAR. The math is identical; only the symbol and formatting change. The tool does not convert between currencies.
Is my data saved or shared?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to any server, stored, or shared with anyone.
